From the spring of 2026 Budapest will welcome 70 state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly, low-floor, fully electric buses to its transport fleet, as announced by the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK). The buses will operate primarily on key routes crossing the city's central areas, significantly enhancing the city's commitment to green and sustainable public transport solutions.

Seventy modern, environmentally friendly, low-floor, air-conditioned, fully electric buses will join Budapest’s transport fleet from the spring of 2026, the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK) announced on Thursday.

The fifty solo and twenty articulated electric buses will be introduced thanks to the successful conclusion of two public procurement tenders aimed at renewing expiring service contracts.

Both tenders were won by ArrivaBus, and two 12-year contracts were signed on Thursday.

The buses will be introduced gradually from the spring of 2026. In addition to general bus operations, the provider will also be responsible for the maintenance of the vehicles, the employment of drivers, and the establishment and operation of electric charging infrastructure.

The electric BYD buses will primarily operate on key routes crossing the inner areas of the capital, they added.

The statement also noted that the new agreements will cover part of the tasks included in the service contracts, which ArrivaBus has fulfilled since 2015 with 240 buses, and which will gradually expire from 2025.

Plans also include signing a service agreement for the operation of 20 fully electric midi buses. The public procurement process for this is currently underway.

51 modern, low-floor, air-conditioned CAF trams will arrive in Budapest, and efforts are being made to expand the fleet with 100 more modern trams and 160 environmentally friendly, low-floor trolleybuses.
