The Roman Catholic Church’s charity organization, Caritas Hungary has provided some four million forints in aid to the families affected by a tragic boarding school accident in Székelyudvarhely (Odorheiu Secuisesc) in Transylvania. Caritas has also launched a donation drive to further help the victims of the accident.

Tragedy hit the Transylvanian town of Székelyudvarhely (Odorheiu Secuiesc) on Monday, 18 December. One of the walls of the halls of residence of the Tamási Áron Secondary School collapsed during the renovation of its indoor plumbing system. The accident killed a 17-year-old student and injured several others.

A chief executive of the company in charge of the plumbing renovation, Láreno-Fa Kft, has been arrested under the suspicion of negligent homicide and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The suspect is claiming he was not aware that there were students in the building. He is also claiming that students were warned to leave.

Under his supervision, the construction crew dug a ditch 2 metres (6 foot 7 inches) deep by the wall, as opposed to the 1.1-metre (3 feet 7 inches) deep one originally included in the plans—this could have been the cause for the fatal collapse.

In the time of grave tragedy and grief, Caritas Hungary, the legal aid organization of the Roman Catholic Church of Hungary, offered its help.

They have provided four million HUF (around $11,500) in aid to the families affected by the accident. Caritas Gyulafehérvár, their sister organization operating in Gyulafehérvár (Alba Iulia), Romania will help with the logistics of distributing the aid packages in a swift manner. As Caritas Hungary wrote in their public statement, this is the first time they are cooperating with their fellow philanthropists in Gyulafehérvár, and they have been satisfied with the work they have done so far.

The Catholic organization is also asking for donations to provide further help with the victims of the tragedy. You can donate by wiring money to this bank account number: HU30120111480001245300100008. Swift code: UBRTHUHBXXX.
