István Győrkös, who has been convicted of murdering the police officer conducting a search of his property in Bőny, Hungary in 2016, has sued the Hungarian government in the European Court of Human Rights. He alleges that he has been deprived of his right to due process, according to the reporting by the Hungarian tabloid paper Blikk.
Győrkös maintains his innocence, and claims the killing was an accident (which, by the way, would still likely make him guilty of manslaughter). He is currently serving a life sentence for murder.
The man, who is the former leader of the far-right organization Hungarian National Front (Magyar Nemzeti Arcvonal), shot dead police officer Péter Pálvölgyi with a machine gun on 26 October 2016. Following the death of Péter Pálvölgyi, a shootout ensued between the police and Győrkös, in which he too was injured.
Six months ago, he filed an action against the Hungarian state with the Strasbourg court, alleging poor prison conditions and violation of his right to a fair trial. The man, aged 85 now, would be eligible for parole at the age of 101.
