Recent high precipitation has caused river levels to rise all across the country. In Budapest, the Danube is expected to rise above the level of the embankment on Thursday. Preparations and warnings are in place in other parts of the country as well.

The high precipitation in recent days has led to increased water levels on the River Danube and its tributaries. As a result, there is a flood warning in place for a 1,200-kilometre (750 miles) section of the Danube, General Directorate of Water Management (OVF) spokesperson Gabriella Siklós told the Hungarian state news agency MTI on Tuesday, 26 December.

On Monday, the Danube’s level peaked at 636 centimetres (248 inches) at around 10 a.m. on Monday in Budapest. However, the river is expected to be at its highest point on Thursday, 28 December, based on the water flow at its other parts; and is estimated to be reaching 680 centimetres (268 inches). That is higher than the level where the Budapest embankment lies, which is at 645 centimetres (254 inches).

Interior Minister Károly Kontrát shared some photos of the Budapest embankment under water today.

However, the water level of the Danube is also expected to dip below the embankment by this Friday.

All vehicles parked on the Budapest embankment have been towed away in preparation for the flood.

Evidently, roads in danger of flooding have also been closed to traffic in the capital city.

Flood warnings are in place in other parts of the country as well. In Baja, Bács-Kiskun County, the Danube is estimated to rise as high as 810 centimetres (319 inches). Meanwhile, the River Leitha is also rising, ‘bringing’ flood alerts to places like Mosonmagyaróvár, Győr-Moson-Sopron County in the northwestern part of Hungary.
