President Trump is running a campaign like no Republican before him in the 21st century. This Sunday, 28 October, he held a massive rally at the iconic venue Madison Square Garden in the deep blue city of New York City, New York. The 19,500 capacity was filled up, with tens of thousands more in line, yearning to get in.
Among those in attendance were the MEPs of the newly formed Patriots for Europe political group in the European Parliament. The new faction was founded by Fidesz party leader and Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán, along with Herbert Kickl, Chairman of the Austrian Freedom Party, and Andrej Babiš, the former Czech prime minister and Chairman of the ANO party following the 2024 European Parliamentary elections.
Patriots for Europe posted a video on their X (formerly Twitter) page about the grandiose event. In it, several Patriots MEPs speak about why they are at the rally.
Jorge Buxadé of the Spanish VOX party declares that they came to the Trump event ‘just a few days before his great victory’. Anna Bryłka of the Polish Ruch Narodowy party says Donald Trump wants to solve in the United States the very same problems Europe is facing: illegal immigration, economic stagnation and assumptions about climate policy. Harald Vilimsky, a representative for the Austrian right-wing populist FPÖ party, explains:
‘Over 100,000 guests in the middle of New York, [at] Madison Square Garden, and our Patriots group is invited. Why are we here? Because we are also against globalization, we are against war, we are against fake news, because we want to stand up against left-wing media lies and because we are for a better future where our countries have a better future away from illegal immigration and where the decision-making power falls back into the hands of the respective populations,’ the Austrian MEP said.
Ondřej Knotek from the Czech ANNO 2011 party also shared a brief message of support for the current Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump.
Tamás Deutsch from the Hungarian Fidesz party also makes an appearance in the video, saying:
‘”Make America Great Again,” this is President Trump’s programme, his goal. It is no coincidence that the motto of the Hungarian presidency [of the Council of the EU] is “Make Europe Great Again’. If America is great, and Europe is great, cooperation between the two can only bring good things.’
The issue of a disingenuous, liberal mainstream media, which MEP Vilimsky mentions in the video, has come up in the case of President Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden as well.
Some in the American media tried to draw a connection between this event and an event by pro-Nazi Germany Americans in February 1939 simply because it was held in the same venue. Never mind the fact that other presidential candidates and Presidents, such as John F Kennedy and Franklin D Roosevelt, have made appearances in the same place. Also, as most Americans know, music acts around the world regard it as a great honour to play in that venue. Music legends such as Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and, more recently, Billy Joel, Andrea Bocelli, and Billie Eilish have held concerts at MSG before. But facts obviously don’t matter for those suffering from the Trump derangement syndrome.
