More than 168 million people have already watched the conversation between former US President Donald Trump, the current Republican presidential candidate, and Elon Musk on X, lasting two hours. The interview, which was broadcast live on Monday evening, attracted over 1.2 million real time viewers, despite initial technical issues that delayed the start beyond the scheduled time.
The interview covered a wide range of topics, including the border crisis, soaring inflation, and the Biden administration’s foreign policy. In his characteristic forthright manner, Trump criticized his new Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. He remarked: ‘She hasn’t given an interview since this whole scam began,’ referring to Biden stepping aside, which he described as a coup.
Regarding the increasing migratory pressure, Trump placed the blame on Harris, accusing her of failing to close the US–Mexico border in her role as ‘border czar’ under Biden. He referred to his opponent as ‘all talk’, stating that Harris pretends to address the issue, yet, after three and a half years, nothing has changed.
‘They’re coming from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America. They’re coming from everywhere, and there are a lot of really bad ones,’ Trump said, referring to the more than 8 million migrants who have entered the country under President Biden.
The poor state of the US economy was also a recurring topic during the discussion, with Trump focusing on record inflation. ‘You know, four or five years ago, people were saving a lot of money. Today, they’re using all that money and borrowing just to get by,’ Trump argued. ‘It’s a terrible thing that’s happening,’ he added. The former president pointed to oil as one of the main drivers of inflation, suggesting that if Russia had not attacked Ukraine and Hamas had not attacked Israel, prices would be lower.
And thus, the discussion turned to foreign policy: Trump once again harshly—and justifiably—criticized Harris
for her inability to represent US interests with sufficient conviction and seriousness
against strongmen such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. ‘They’re at the top of their game; they’re tough, smart, and ruthless—and they will protect their countries,’ Trump emphasized. ‘When they see Kamala, or when they see sleepy Joe, they can’t even believe it,’ he added.
Trump also addressed tensions in the Middle East, stating that if he were president, Iran would not dare to attack Israel. Relations between the two arch-enemies have been at a boiling point in recent weeks following the assassination of a Hamas political leader in Tehran. Iran has accused Israel of the act and vowed retaliation. ‘I don’t want to do anything bad to Iran,’ the former president asserted. ‘But they knew not to mess around. Iran was broke.’
Perhaps the most interesting moment of the interview was when Trump expressed his support for Elon Musk serving on a commission to monitor government overspending, an idea proposed by the Tesla and SpaceX founder. ‘You’re the greatest cutter,’ the former president remarked to the entrepreneur.
Trump then elaborated on what he described as the radicalism of the Democratic ticket, warning voters that Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, could be very dangerous if they came to power. ‘She is considered far more liberal than Bernie Sanders.
She’s a radical left lunatic,’
Trump said of Harris. ‘And if she becomes our president, very quickly, you’re not going to have a country anymore,’ he continued. Trump described Walz as ‘an anti-Israel, radical left figure’ who is also ‘far worse’ than Bernie Sanders.
