As accusations against Elon Musk for allegedly interfering in European democracy continue to grow, including discussions of a potential ban on X in certain European countries, Hungarian government party Fidesz’s MEP András László shared a detailed post on X, highlighting the double standards of Western progressives in defining electoral interference. In his writing, László contrasted the cases of Elon Musk with that of George Soros. Musk himself retweeted the post, which garnered a significant 16.6 million views within days.
The criticism of Musk intensified after the US billionaire referred to the right-wing, anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party as the ‘only solution’ to Germany’s problems following the terrorist attack at the Magdeburg Christmas market last December. After a series of posts partially endorsing AfD’s views, Musk hosted a live conversation on X with AfD co-chair Alice Weidel, lasting over an hour. At the conclusion of the discussion, Musk reiterated his support for the party, stating: ‘People really need to get behind the AfD. Otherwise, things are going to get very, very much worse in Germany.’
In this context, László András highlighted the hypocritical attitude and double standards of the Western elite, drawing attention to the ongoing struggle between Hungary and the Hungarian-born American billionaire George Soros, as well as the Democratic administration led by Joe Biden in recent years. ‘When $10 million was illegally channelled to the Hungarian left for their 2022 election campaign, elites in Brussels stayed silent. When the U.S. Embassy in Budapest began distributing funding to left-wing media, elites in Brussels stayed silent,’ the Fidesz MEP stated, listing examples of US actions that exhausted the concept of electoral interference.
He noted that the Hungarian government had attempted to address these issues—much like what EU leaders are now urging in response to Musk—by enacting a law to protect national sovereignty. This effort, however, resulted in a lawsuit from the European Commission against Hungary. ‘Commissioners did however warmly receive George Soros on many occasions in the European Commission for official meetings. NGOs who lobby the EU, receive his funding,’ László stressed.
George Soros has been meddling in European politics since at least the regime changes in Eastern Europe. Through his extensive network of NGOs, he seeks to impose his progressive agenda across the continent. This agenda includes supporting mass migration, promoting LGBTQ+ and gender ideologies, and advocating for the dismantling of traditional social structures and the sovereignty of nation states. Elon Musk has previously referred to George Soros as ‘an enemy of humanity’, a statement with which many on the political right agree, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
However, as László also noted, the Western elite is not hostile to George Soros or his empire. On the contrary, they actively support his agenda, effectively extending a quasi-invitation for his interference.
‘Now that there is another billionaire, Elon Musk, who dares to merely voice his opinion on European politics in favour of one political side or another, the so-called liberal elites want to cancel democracy if they dislike the outcome of elections,’ the Fidesz MEP wrote. He also shared a video in which former European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton, one of Musk’s most vocal critics, effectively admits that Brussels played a role in annulling the results of Romania’s presidential election, suggesting that if sovereignist forces win February’s elections in Germany, Brussels is prepared to intervene there as well.
‘We need change in Brussels! We need to defend our democracies and our sovereignty!’ László concluded.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also defended Musk recently, pointing out that not him, but George Soros is the real enemy of Europe and democracy.
