According to the National Election Office (NVI) data on Monday morning, voter turnout at foreign missions was 87 per cent for the election of Hungarian members of the European Parliament (EP); out of the 21,458 registered voters, 18,661 cast their votes.

In the EP elections, Hungarian citizens with a Hungarian residence but who were abroad on election day and registered in the foreign missions’ electoral register could vote at these locations. This right also extended to those EU citizens who had requested registration to vote for the Hungarian list in the EP election.

This is not to be confused with postal votes, a method those Hungarian citizens who live in a non-EU country and those living in Hungary but having no Hungarian address can avail themselves of.

The National Election Commission will determine the EP election results based on the 10,119 Hungarian electoral district protocols, the protocols establishing the foreign mission voting results, and the protocols from the counting of votes cast by mail, with the final results announced no later than 28 June.
