The police press release issued after the arrest revealed that the 32-year-old man had stabbed a Hungarian man in the back with a sword in 2011, leading to the victim’s death.

A man holding Algerian, Canadian, and Hungarian citizenships, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in Canada for murder but escaped from prison in May, was apprehended at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport. The authorities had been searching for him since his escape, as reported by the Hungarian National Bureau of Investigation of the Rapid Response and Special Police Service (KR NNI) on Wednesday.

The statement revealed that the 32-year-old man had stabbed a Hungarian man in the back with a sword in 2011, leading to the victim’s death. After committing the crime, the perpetrator fled the scene but later voluntarily surrendered to the authorities.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and began serving his sentence. However, while in prison, he committed another serious offence, causing severe personal injury. As a result, after 12 years, the Canadian authorities denied him parole. Following the hearing related to this decision he chose to escape. The Hungarian National Bureau of Investigation has released a brief video of the arrest of the wanted criminal.

According to the KR NNI statement, the man escaped this spring from the Federal Training Centre in Laval, Quebec, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Correctional Service. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was placed on the website listing Quebec’s most dangerous criminals.

On Tuesday morning, in collaboration with the Airport Police Directorate, the KR NNI apprehended the man when he disembarked from a flight arriving in Budapest from Amsterdam.

Upon entering the country, he used his brother’s identification documents to verify his identity. The police handcuffed him at the terminal and took him to the Airport Police Directorate, where he was taken into custody.

Due to the use of a document issued in another person’s name, criminal proceedings for forgery of official documents have also been initiated against him. The decision about his extradition will be made at a later time, the police statement concluded.
