The Hungarian government has seized 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of illegal drugs in the last two weeks, the newly appointed State Commissioner responsible for the eradication of drug trafficking László Horváth announced at a joint press conference with police officials on Wednesday, 19 March, in Budapest, Hungary.
This means that the amount of poison in circulation was reduced, which, in turn, means that the concentrated series of actions against drug criminals was justified and effective. Furthermore, the decisive action has also led to a reduction in the number of drug dealers, who are now distributing less frequently and in smaller quantities, which has also reduced the quantity of drugs being sold, the Commissioner explained.
He went on to state that since 1 March, the police have carried out concentrated raids at nearly a thousand locations, involving around 3,500 police officers. As a result of these actions, around a thousand prosecutions have been launched against drug distributors and users. In all cases where the authorities suspected that drugs were being used, drugs were found.
‘This goes to show you how much the country has been infected by drugs, and thus the zero-tolerance policy on drugs is very much justified,’ he stressed. At the same time, Commissioner Horváth continued, the government’s initiative has also led to collective action by citizens in recent weeks, with numerous reports being filed with the police. This is important because the fight against illegal substances requires social cohesion.
The quest to stop illegal drug use continues. In parallel with the police actions, new pieces of legislation will also be submitted to parliament in a few weeks, which will help law enforcement fight drug crime even faster and more effectively, László Horváth stated.
