Over 1,000 public education facilities have been granted renovation funds under the government’s Hungarian Village Programme, the Hungarian business news site Vilaggazdasag.hu reports. Out of the 1,041 projects granted funding, 974 have already been completed, State Secretary for Public Education in the Ministry of Interior Zoltán Maruzsa announced in Dusnok, Bács-Kiskun County, Hungary.
Dusnok, a town of around 2,700 people in the southern part of the country, was one of the many settlements that recently benefited from the Hungarian Village Programme. It had its elementary school building renovated—State Secretary Maruzsa spoke at the new building’s inauguration there.
He touted the fact that since the government took over the the maintenance and operation of public educational facilities,
a total of 4,821 of them have been renovated;
while an additional 947 of such projects are still ongoing. As he pointed out, that is over half of the total number of public education facilities currently operating in the country, the number of which total 11,851.
The Dusnok-Fajsz Elementary School in particular has received 50 million HUF in funding from the Hungarian Village Programme, which was supplemented with an additional 80 million HUF by the school district, bringing the total budget of the renovation project to 130 million HUF ($360,000). The school used this sum not only to improve their facilities, but also to expand and replace their equipment.
Róbert Zsigó, the MP from the governing Fidesz party representing the region in the National Assembly, also spoke at the inauguration. At the event, he stressed that
developing settlements in rural Hungary has been one of the government’s top priorities in recent years,
with a special focus on smaller settlements. The independent Mayor of Dusnok István Mindszenti praised the Hungarian Village Programme as well, saying that it is of great help to settlements with populations of less than 5,000.
