Hungary Sees Increase in Employment in July 2024

In July 2024 the average number of employed persons aged 15–74 increased by 20,000 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH). On the domestic primary labour market, 4.580 million people were employed, 26,000 more than a year earlier.

In July 2024 the average number of employed persons aged 15–74 increased by 20,000 compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 4.765 million, according to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) announced on Friday. The number of unemployed persons stood at 209,000, with an unemployment rate of 4.2 per cent.

During the May–July 2024 period, the average number of employed persons in the 15–74 age group was 4.746 million. While the overall number remained relatively unchanged, the number of employed men slightly decreased to 2.501 million, while the number of employed women increased by 29,000 to 2.245 million.

Meanwhile, the number of people working abroad slightly increased to 109,000, and the number of public workers decreased by 12,000 to 57,000, according to the report.

In the 15–64 age group, the employment rate expanded by 0.3 percentage points to 75.1 per cent. The rate for men slightly decreased to 79.0 per cent, while for women, it increased by 0.8 percentage points to 71.2 per cent.

In the May–July 2024 period, the number of unemployed persons aged 15–74 increased by 12,000 compared to the previous year, reaching 210,000, and the unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 4.2 per cent.

For men, the number of unemployed persons was 109,000, with an unemployment rate of 4.2 per cent essentially unchanged from the previous year. Among women, the number of unemployed was 101,000 with the unemployment rate increasing by 0.3 percentage points to 4.3 per cent.

The average duration of job search was 9.7 months, with 37 per cent of all unemployed seeking work for less than three months and 35 per cent searching for at least one year.

According to the administrative data of the National Employment Service, the number of registered job seekers decreased by 1.4 per cent year-on-year to 224,000 by the end of July 2024.
