Hungary has reinforced its commitment to humanitarian aid in Nigeria with the launch of a new Hungary Helps mission, led by State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians Tristan Azbej. Announcing the initiative from Nigeria, Azbej highlighted that the West African nation has been a key location for Hungarian humanitarian programmes over the past seven years.

Despite its rich cultural heritage and rapidly growing population, Nigeria faces severe challenges, including humanitarian crises, violent conflicts, slow economic development, and desertification, forcing many to consider migration as their only option. In some regions, terrorist groups continue to instil fear among local communities.

Azbej noted the determination of Nigerian authorities in fighting extremism, but he also pointed out that Nigeria remains the most dangerous country for Christians. In 2023 alone, nearly 5,000 Christians lost their lives due to religious persecution. Hungary stands in solidarity with Nigeria, especially with those suffering persecution, he emphasized.

Over the past several years, the Hungarian government has provided millions of dollars in aid to support churches and humanitarian organizations operating in the region. This assistance, Azbej explained, is rooted in Christian solidarity and is intended to help local communities build their future at home rather than seeking refuge in Europe.

During his current visit, Azbej aims to assess the impact of Hungarian aid efforts, identify the urgent needs of communities affected by crises, and lay the groundwork for new life-saving initiatives. His schedule includes meetings with church and government leaders, as well as survivors of mass violence and terrorist attacks.

Beyond providing material aid, Azbej also carries a message of support from Hungary to the people of Nigeria: ‘You are not alone. Hungary stands with you.’

Expressing gratitude to Hungarian and Nigerian professionals working on the mission, he also thanked the Hungarian Defence Forces for enabling access to high-risk humanitarian sites. He encouraged the public to follow the mission’s progress, reaffirming Hungary’s commitment to helping with both compassion and rational action.
