Hungary is preparing to take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July. As part of that preparation, the country has revealed its presidency’s official logo and slogan. It seems that the Orbán administration is still not afraid to cause some stir-ups in Brussels, as they chose a very familiar sounding catchphrase.
According to the graphic shared by political director of the Prime Minister Balázs Orbán on the social media site X,
the official slogan for Hungary’s 2024 EU presidency is ‘Make Europe Great Again’.
This is an obvious allusion to US President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ (or MAGA, its commonly used abbreviated form), which he used in all three of his presidential campaigns in which he has run as a Republican. A very similar phrase, ‘Let’s Make America Great Again’ was used by President Ronald Reagan in his 1980 campaign.
Hungary’s variation of the phrase has the extra benefit that when forming an acronym from it, it produces ‘mega,’ a prefix of ancient Greek origin meaning ‘large,’ which is used in systems of units denoting a factor of one million.
As for the logo, Hungary chose to display a Rubik’s cube, the popular 3D combination puzzle invented by Hungarian professor of architecture and design Ernő Rubik. The cube is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. On the logo, three sides of the cube are visible. On one side, the squares make out the Hungarian flag, on another side, it’s the EU flag, and on the third side, there are blank squares.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary has never been shy in voicing his preference in the 2024 US Presidential election.
He has stated multiple times that he believes that the ongoing Russo–Ukrainian war can only end in peace if Donald Trump is re-elected to the White House in November. He has also expressed his moral support to the former POTUS on X (Twitter) after he was convicted in a Manhattan court last month.
Prime Minister Orbán’s continued support did not go unnoticed by President Trump himself.
He often talks about Orbán as a ‘strong leader’ in Europe, and cites his opinion on the ending of the war in Ukraine as a talking point for his campaign, even when he is on a platform as large as famous YouTuber Logan Paul’s podcast Impaulsive.
Hungary will be occupying the role of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union between 1 July and 31 December 2024.
