Despite pressure from the United States, the Hungarian government will not change its position regarding the war in Ukraine, as 80 per cent of the Hungarian people agree with it, the leader of Nézőpont Institute said on Thursday, 13 April in the ‘Good Morning Hungary!’ programme of public Kossuth radio.
The American Billboard Campaign In Hungary
Sámuel Ágoston Mráz said that the billboard campaign launched with the support of the US Embassy is part of an American attempt to change the Hungarian government’s position on the war. This attempt also includes not inviting Hungary to the Democracy Summit and the announcement of US sanctions involving Hungary, he added. ‘So far, they have done everything, and they will continue to do everything in the future on behalf of the United States government to make Hungary change its position,’ he said, adding that this will not succeed because 80 per cent of the people agree that there should be no arms shipments and that the government should stand for peace.
The billboard campaign draws a parallel between the 1956 Hungarian events and the current war in Ukraine. According to Sámuel Ágoston Mráz, this parallel is not valid, because back then the United States stayed away from the conflict, while the rest of the world provided humanitarian aid to Hungary. He added that Hungary is now doing the same, as it is receiving Ukrainian refugees and providing both humanitarian and economic assistance to Kyiv. He also spoke about the fact that since the US campaign support for the Dollar-Left has been exposed, those who financed the leftist parties are now looking for new opportunities.
Responding To Pressman
Regarding the war, Mráz noted that the number of people in the United States who hold a peace-loving position is increasing, and this position is not just represented by former US President Donald Trump, but by several Democrats and Republicans alike. He opined that the US government will keep increasing the pressure on the Hungarian government. Ambassador David Pressman’s announcement on Wednesday was part of that effort, but it will not succeed in changing the government’s stance, the expert noted.
The Passover Seder hosted by the US ambassador in Budapest was also mentioned in the programme. Leader of the Jobbik-Conservatives party Márton Gyöngyösi, who became infamous for anti-Semitic statements made some years ago, was invited to the dinner as well. The Nézőpont Institute director said that with this step, the US embassy clearly assisted a politician and his party in their ‘attempt of whitewashing’. The ‘dollar advisors’ are working to turn Jobbik into a completely new party, he emphasised.
