According to the Budapest Business Journal, MÁV had 50,000 employees on their payroll across two entities, making them the largest employer in the country. Among non-state-owned companies, the building cleaning and facility management firm B+N Referencia Zrt has the most workers, 14,217.

The Hungarian national railway company MÁV continues to be the company with the most employees in the country in February of this year, the Budapest Business Journal reports. MÁV currently has 50,000 people on its payroll.

However, the business news site specifies that their list only includes companies that do public reports on their monthly headcount data.

This information also contradicts the information available on the Working-right.hu website, a site run by the NGO Menedék – Hungarian Association for Migrants. They list Magyar Posta Zrt as the number one employer in the country, followed by Volánbusz Zrt, and MÁV is only in third place on their list. However, the discrepancy likely comes from the fact that they list MÁV-Start Zrt, evidently part of the MÁV group, separately in sixth place. Meanwhile, BBJ specifically writes that MÁV has 50,000 employees ‘across two entities’. Also, Working-right.hu does not denote the date from which their data is.

The business news site also writes in its piece that B+N Referencia Zrt, a building cleaning and facility management firm, is the largest employer among non-state-owned companies, with 14,217 people working for it.

They also report on unfortunate job losses in the automotive industry in Hungary, with Audi cutting 170 jobs, Thyssenkrupp Components cutting 316 jobs, Continental cutting 75 jobs, and Jabil cutting 100 jobs in one month this year. However, at the same time, the BMW plant in Debrecen, Hungary, added 191 new jobs, bringing the total number of workers on its payroll to 2,613 in February.

According to Eurostat, Hungary’s unemployment rate was 4.3 per cent in February 2025. That is below the total EU unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent in the same month, and is ranked the ninth lowest among the 27 Member States.
