If Serbian police forces reduce their presence on Hungarian routes for any reason, migration pressure on the Hungarian border could increase again, stated the Prime Minister’s Chief Security Advisor György Bakondi on public M1 news television’s morning programme on Wednesday.
György Bakondi reported that nearly three thousand border violators have been apprehended and forty-five human traffickers brought to court in Hungary this year. While these numbers are lower than in the same period last year, they remain significantly high compared to the pre-2015 peace period, he added. He pointed out that human traffickers decide when and where illegal immigrants move, suggesting that ‘European-level coordination is also presumed in the background’. Therefore, Hungary must maintain its security measures, he emphasized. Bakondi declared that all migration routes leading to Europe are congested.
The chief advisor recalled that the route from Greece and Türkiye through Bulgaria had reached Europe via Hungary for a long time. However, this situation was halted in the last quarter of last year when Hungarian law enforcement, in cooperation with the Serbians, strengthened border control and expelled human traffickers, he explained.
As a result, a strong diversion effect emerged towards Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia.
Bakondi also noted that the European population’s view on illegal immigration has changed compared to a few years ago. People are baffled as to why so many illegal migrants were allowed in and why migrants are receiving ‘an increasingly larger share’ of social benefits, he stated. He asserted that the general perception among the public is worsening due to the terror attacks in Europe, numerous criminal offences, the emergence of no-go zones, and the impossibility of deportations.
He underscored that all this has political ramifications, remarking that ‘It is no coincidence that 18 million voted for conservative-patriotic parties’ in the European Parliament elections.
Bakondi also discussed on Kossuth Radio’s morning programme that a ‘social and political shift’ regarding the perception of migrants is occurring across Europe. He mentioned that in the United Kingdom ‘a societal explosion’ was caused by the incident a week ago in which a 17-year-old of Rwandan origin fatally stabbed three girls under ten years old and injured several others. He indicated that Italy is also seeking a national solution, as it finds the European Union’s migration policy and practice unsatisfactory.
