Work on the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant has reached an important milestone, according to Péter Szijjártó. The Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced this in a Facebook post following a telephone conversation with Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev.
‘The soil stabilization works beneath the nuclear island of Unit 5 have been successfully completed, marking another important milestone in the construction of the Paks nuclear power plant,’ Szijjártó wrote. In his statement, the minister emphasized that recent energy policy setbacks have once again demonstrated that the truly secure countries are those capable of producing the majority of the energy they need themselves. ‘Given Hungary’s capabilities, this means we must accelerate the construction of the two new units at the Paks nuclear power plant,’ Szijjártó stressed.
Szijjártó stated that on Monday he had a telephone conversation with CEO of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev to mark the Paks project reaching another important milestone, as
ground consolidation for the nuclear island of Unit 6 has begun.
‘In parallel, preparations for the full excavation works are underway, with the appointed subcontractor gradually mobilizing on site to ensure that full excavation can begin in mid-September,’ the minister wrote. He added that 24,000 piles have already been driven into the ground during the preparation work, meaning that just under a third of the required piles are already in place.
Szijjártó added that, together with the CEO of Rosatom, they reviewed the important tasks for the coming weeks, which are necessary to further accelerate the project. He added that more than a thousand people are already working on the site, and this number is expected to increase significantly in the near future.
