The United States is set to implement a new tariff system starting Wednesday, following President Donald Trump’s official approval, the White House announced. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described 2 April—the day the tariff system was unveiled—as one of the most significant days in modern American history.

Speaking at the daily press briefing, Leavitt explained that the administration aims to end decades of unfair trade practices, in which many foreign countries restricted access to their markets while the US maintained one of the world’s most open economies. She stressed that the lack of reciprocity in trade has contributed to the US trade deficit and that the new tariffs are designed to level the playing field.

Leavitt also revealed that multiple countries have already reached out to the White House, requesting discussions about the new tariffs. She emphasized that President Trump remains open to negotiations on the issue.

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson acknowledged that while the transition might be challenging at first, he firmly believes that the new system will ultimately benefit all Americans.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated in her daily press briefing that the tariffs are not specifically targeted at Mexico or Canada, but rather represent a broader global policy shift. However, she warned that given the deep economic integration between Mexico and the US, the tariffs could pose significant challenges, particularly in the automobile sector.

During the briefing, Leavitt also confirmed that President Trump will visit Saudi Arabia in May, hinting that it could be his first international trip since assuming office in January.

When asked about the Russia–Ukraine conflict, Leavitt stated that US diplomatic teams remain in constant communication with both Russian and Ukrainian representatives, though she provided no further details on ongoing peace efforts.

With the new trade policy set to reshape global economic relations, the world will be closely watching how international partners adapt to the US administration’s evolving trade strategy.
