President of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) Klaus Schormann believes there is a good chance that Hungary will host the 2027 World Championships.

Speaking to public Kossuth radio at the World Cup held at Ludovika Campus, the German sports leader stated that while due to formalities he cannot declare this outright, the important event before the Los Angeles Olympics should be entrusted to an association that has already proven itself.

‘I am not running for re-election, but my influence remains. The presidency also represents this spirit; we will make a good decision,’ he promised. He mentioned that Hungarian sports leaders requested to host the World Championships scheduled for three years from now in celebration of the hundred years of Hungarian pentathlon. Schormann revealed that he had discussed this with the Hungarian Olympic Committee and told President Gyulay Zsolt that when deciding on future events, they must consider how the sport will perform at the Los Angeles Olympics, where there will be an obstacle race in place of equestrianism.

‘Everything must be perfect, just like in the 2028 Olympics,’

he stated, referring to the 2027 World Championships.

President of the Hungarian Modern Pentathlon Association (MÖSZ) Gábor Balogh announced at a press conference for the Budapest World Cup last week that they will bid to host the 2027 World Championships. For this, MÖSZ has received preliminary support from the government, allowing them to commence negotiations.

In his statement, the UIPM President referred to the idea of the necessity for change and the renewal of the sport, which arose at the Frankfurt Congress in 2016. When discussing the programme for the 2028 Olympics with the German President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, he told them that

pentathlon should become as widely accessible as possible.

‘We have taken the right steps. I understand if some are disappointed, but this is reality; we must give everyone the opportunity. The international federation is growing and strengthening worldwide. In the interest of the Olympics, we have decided in favour of change, absolutely fairly and openly,’ Schormann emphasized. ‘I am convinced that we will be successful in Los Angeles. We will be on the programme in 2032 and for a long time to come,’ he added.

The 77-year-old German Klaus Schormann, who has been active in the sport since 1972 and has been at the helm of the international federation since July 1993, announced in early April that he will not run for another term at the Riyadh Congress scheduled for 16–17 November, but even after his presidency ends, he wants to remain involved in modern pentathlon.
