Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced his ambition to reshape the European Union during a meeting with the Patriots for Europe party alliance in Brussels. Speaking at the Hungarian House in the Belgian capital ahead of the EU summit, Orbán stated that Hungary positions itself as Brussels’ opposition, working towards becoming its majority.

‘This will take a few years, but we are committed to building stronger cooperation and friendships,’ Orbán remarked. Comparing his vision to Donald Trump’s transformative approach in the United States, he outlined key priorities: halting migration, discarding gender ideology, achieving peace in Ukraine, and swiftly reducing energy prices to restore Europe’s economic competitiveness.

Addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine, Orbán suggested a Christmas ceasefire as a humane gesture to save lives during the holidays. ‘Even in Europe’s bloodiest wars, temporary truces have been possible. Let’s declare a ceasefire for a few Christmas days, refrain from killing on the front lines, and exchange prisoners in large numbers to reunite families,’ he urged.

Orbán explained that this plan, though simple, stems from basic human empathy. ‘Politics often involves complex considerations, but straightforward, heartfelt proposals deserve a chance,’ he said.

When asked if he planned bilateral talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was attending the EU summit, Orbán said: ‘I’m always ready for meaningful discussions.’

On the topic of expanding the Patriots for Europe alliance, Orbán discussed recent developments, including Giorgia Meloni stepping down as leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group. Following talks with Mateusz Morawiecki, Poland’s former prime minister, Orbán highlighted plans to deepen collaboration between their political factions, with a long-term goal of achieving broader unity.

Orbán concluded by emphasizing the importance of strong alliances and proactive initiatives to challenge Brussels’ policies while fostering a vision for Europe rooted in sovereignty and competitiveness.
