Two nuclear powers intend to send depleted-uranium ammunition to Hungary’s neighbouring country, which indicates that the situation is more serious than ever before, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared on public Kossuth radio on Friday.
Measures to Guarantee Hungary’s Security in Place
According to the prime minister, the ongoing conflict contains numerous unpredictable factors. In light of this, it is crucial for the organisations and leaders responsible for Hungary’s security to remain vigilant and prepared to take action whatever the circumstances might be. To fulfil this objective, at the recent meeting of the Defence Council specific duties were assigned to the Minister of Defence, the Chief of the General Staff, and the Minister of the Interior. The PM emphasised that every possible measure for safeguarding the country’s security has been implemented.
War Psychosis Contributes to Escalation
He asserted that although diplomatic efforts are being intensified, the prospects for a resolution do not look ideal due to a prevailing ‘war psychosis’ in Europe. The belief is that this conflict can only be decided and concluded through military means. However, the prime minister emphasised that Hungary’s stance is that there is no battlefield solution to this conflict. Instead, he stressed the need for diplomacy, political negotiations, a ceasefire, and the initiation of peace talks. Such actions are in the best interest of the world, Europe, and Hungary. Viktor Orbán also mentioned that NATO has exercised caution thus far, and that position aligns with that of Hungary. NATO has decided against participating in the military conflict, refraining from supplying weapons to Ukraine or planning any military interventions. The decision to provide arms, information, and military support to Ukraine rests with individual member states. The prime minister reiterated that the strategy that has the objective of Ukraine defeating Russia militarily with Western support is misguided and has resulted in the perpetuation, escalation, and widening of the war.
He recalled the Joe Biden has already raised the possibility of sending depleted-uranium tank round to Kyiv, to which Moscow has reacted that in that case they will also not refrain from using weapons with depleted-uranium in Ukraine. As a result, the ‘situation is more serious than ever before,’ the PM stated.
Trump Could Stop the War
Moving on to another topic, he highlighted his worries about the legal actions taken against former US President Donald Trump. The prime minister suggested that having a pro-peace leader in the United States would be beneficial in stopping the war and establishing peace, which aligns with Hungary’s interests.
Reiterated Commitment to Push Down Inflation
In terms of the economy, according to Orbán the government has made a firm commitment in a challenging situation: to ensure that inflation remains within single-digit figures by the end of the year. He emphasised the importance of having a defence budget and a budget that safeguards essential aspects, not only ensuring national security but also protecting the financial well-being of families, pensioners, and jobs. Orbán suggested that it benefits the country if people choose to keep their savings in government bonds, which is also a safe investment.
New Migration Scheme a Risky Experiment
Regarding the EU draft on mandatory migrant quotas, Viktor Orbán reminded that Hungary and Poland voted against the decision, while Slovakia, Bulgaria, Malta, and to some extent Lithuania expressed a more cautious opposition, which indicates that multiple countries disagree with the scheme. In recent years, there appeared to be a shift in Brussels’ focus from mandatory migrant distribution to border protection, as the solution to the situation is seen as safeguarding Europe’s external borders rather than redistributing migrants. However, a sudden and swift decision emerged, stating that any country refusing to admit migrants would be compelled to do so. This decision establishes rules that grant Brussels the authority to determine the number of migrants to be distributed, the PM stressed.
Orbán emphasised that Germany should implement its own migration policy within their borders, while Hungary should be allowed to maintains its own stance, as it considers the migration distribution experiment risky. The arrival of large numbers of migrants from a different culture through illegal means poses potential problems, and the Hungarian government is unwilling to take such risks. The prime minister stressed that what his administrations has requested was for Brussels to refrain from dictating whom Hungarians should coexist with and to respect Hungary’s autonomy in determining its migration policy, as it is an internal affair.
