In honour of the Hungarian presidency of the Council of European Union, an exhibition is taking place in the atrium of the old headquarters of the EU Council, the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels, Belgium. The theme of the exhibition is great inventions by Hungarians.
Evidently, the Rubik’s Cube, invented by professor of architecture Ernő Rubik in 1974, is a prominent feature of the display. In fact, the Rubik’s Cube is a major element of the official logo of the 2024 Hungarian EU presidency as well.
On top of the world-famous puzzle, Hungarian aviator Oszkár Asboth’s proto-helicopter, created in 1928, is also on display. So is the electric locomotive, invented by Kálmán Kandó in 1894, according to a post on the social media site X by the Hungarian Presidency of the EU Council.
The same message tells of a ‘dazzling holographic showcase’—that is not by chance at all, since the technology of holography itself was developed by a Hungarian man as well, namely physicist Dénes Gábor in 1947.
Other great inventions in the showcase include Ányos Jedlik’s dynamo (1861), Dávid Schwarz’s airship (1896), as well as Donát Bánki’s water turbine (1917).
Hungary is occupying the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU between July and December 2024.
