István Mohácsy was elected president of Fidelitas, the youth organization of Hungarian governing party, Fidesz, on 28 November 2024. Last week, he led the organization’s delegation to Washington, D.C., at the invitation of Republicans for National Renewal, to attend the inauguration of US President Donald Trump. During his visit, Mohácsy engaged in significant discussions both before and after the ceremony. In an interview with Hungarian Conservative, he reflected on the opportunities and future prospects for strengthening relationships between conservative youth organizations, both overseas and across Europe.

Fidelitas was invited to Donald Trump’s inauguration by the US organization Republicans for National Renewal. What is the nature of Fidelitas’ relationship with this organization, and how does it contribute to strengthening Hungarian–American relations?
Our organization maintains strong connections across the Atlantic. We have enjoyed a productive and active relationship with Republicans for National Renewal for many years. Together, we co-host the annual summit of youth leaders from the transatlantic region following CPAC Budapest. The experience of 20 January, the day of the inauguration, was truly historic. Hungarian–American relations have the potential to reach unprecedented heights, as US President Donald Trump’s policies align closely with those of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on key issues. Consequently, we view this as a unique and historic opportunity for Fidelitas to establish robust alliances in the United States.
Reports from the field suggest that there was a palpable atmosphere of ‘regime change’ at the inauguration ceremony. What was your personal experience of the event? Where there any particularly memorable moments?
We arrived in Washington, D.C., a few days before the inauguration, and from the outset, it was evident that a significant portion of the American people welcomed the change and supported President Trump’s policies. The streets were filled with people proudly wearing Trump T-shirts, hats, and scarves. For me, the most memorable moment was President Trump’s speech. The ideas he presented closely align with the way we view the world in Hungary: no to migration, war, and gender madness.
As mentioned in your Facebook post, the delegation is focused on strengthening overseas relations in the days following the inauguration. What progress has been made in this regard, and which organizations have been involved in the discussions?
We have established contact with organizations that are strong patriots, deeply value their country, and share our commitment to nationalism. Discussions focused on potential collaboration with the youth organization of the Republican Party and a university organization known for its staunch support of Republican values. Our primary objective is to foster mutual understanding and exchange by learning about each other’s activities and organizing forums where young Hungarians and Americans interested in public life and politics can connect. These interactions are of great significance, as they have the potential to cultivate lifelong acquaintances, relationships, and friendships between Hungarian and American youth.
One of the key priorities of your visit to the US was to strengthen the youth network of Patriots for Europe. Where does this project currently stand? Which countries are actively involved, and what are the long-term goals for its development?
We believe it is essential that, as Patriots for Europe grows stronger, we also reinforce our connections with youth organizations that share our values. Across Europe, there are numerous patriotic youth movements with which we have collaborated for years. Our aim is to build on this sentiment in a more coordinated and structured manner, thereby strengthening and deepening our cooperation.
