The European Parliament (EP), still regrettably dominated by globalist and progressive majorities, has once again demonstrated that it despises one thing more than representing the genuine interests of its voters: freedom of expression. Specifically, the freedom to voice opinions that do not align perfectly with the mainstream progressive agenda. According to Euronews’ recent article, the EP is intensifying pressure on the European Commission to investigate Elon Musk’s alleged attempts to influence the German elections in February. This includes organizing a livestream with leader of the right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party Alice Weidel.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron, together with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, has accused the world’s richest man of directly interfering in Europe’s democratic processes, also citing Germany’s early elections as an example.
Some Intervene, Some Not
Judging by the reactions, Musk appears to have committed an unforgivable sin. One might assume that, under the guise of foreign election interference, he has established a network of international NGOs employing biased reporting, manipulated statistics, and other tactics to benefit his allies. Perhaps he is financially supporting media outlets to vilify his political opponents with false smear campaigns, ultimately aiming to unseat them or prevent them from attaining power.
Indeed, such practices are reprehensible and must be opposed to safeguard the sovereignty of nation-states. Yet, when these actions originate from the progressive side, they are not met with criticism or resistance but rather with state honours—consider the example of George Soros, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Joe Biden in the final days of his presidency.
However, Musk does none of the above, nor does he come close to engaging in such practices. So how, then, has he managed to incur the unanimous hatred and opposition of the entire Western European progressive elite? The answer is straightforward: the owner of X, Tesla, and SpaceX openly expresses views that are diametrically opposed to the globalist progressive agenda. And in the western half of Europe, this is a sin that remains utterly unforgivable.
Musk’s Cardinal Sins
Criticism of Musk began to intensify when the US billionaire aligned himself with President-elect Donald Trump during the presidential campaign last year, offering both his presence and resources to support the Republican candidate. Such involvement is far from unusual in the United States; most billionaires back one party and its candidates. What was deemed ‘odd’ and ‘reprehensible’, however, was that Musk, unlike some 90 per cent of the elite, chose not to support the Democrats.
Musk’s next unforgivable sin came after last Christmas’s terrorist attack in Germany, when he used his platform on X to highlight the dangers of illegal migration. He further asserted that the only party in Germany offering a genuine solution to the issue is right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). Musk subsequently shared a series of posts detailing the AfD’s policies and programme, culminating in an invitation to the party’s co-chair, Alice Weidel, for a discussion scheduled to be broadcast live on X on 9 January.
In doing so, Musk has truly shaken up the European political landscape, which has been far from stagnant in recent times. Since its foundation in 2013, the AfD has been subjected to a cordon sanitaire both politically and in the media: neither German political parties nor the mainstream German media have been willing to cooperate with them. By providing a platform for AfD politicians, Musk is aiding the party in breaking out of this isolation—a process that now appears inevitable.
Through this, the US billionaire is dismantling one of the most powerful weapons progressives have wielded: the deliberate silencing of opposing voices. This tactic has been effectively employed in forums like the European Parliament, as seen in the treatment of right-wing groups such as Patriots for Europe. Musk is countering this strategy by simply allowing right-wing forces to voice their opinions. In other words, he is upholding their most fundamental democratic right: the right to freedom of expression.

The fact that progressive elites do everything in their power to suppress right-wing opinions is neither surprising nor a new phenomenon. This is an issue we have addressed many times in the columns of Hungarian Conservative, including the controversy surrounding last year’s National Conservatism Conference (NatCon) in Brussels, where a district mayor attempted to obstruct the event using police force.
The Champion of Free Speech
When Musk acquired X (formerly Twitter), he vowed to restore free speech to what was then a liberal echo chamber. True to his word, he delivered. Today, Musk’s name is synonymous with the fight for free speech. In doing so, the American billionaire has cemented his position as public enemy number one for progressive elites in Western Europe.
At the moment, however, it appears that the elite may be overplaying their hand. From 20 January, when Donald Trump is inaugurated, Musk will head a US federal agency and maintain his strong, close relationship with the 47th President of the United States. Launching a campaign against Musk risks escalating tensions to the point where the European Union could effectively declare ‘war’ on the United States.
Such a move would have negative consequences for the EU in every respect, from economy to security. Yet, as history has shown, progressive elites—driven by fear of losing their positions—are often prone to making irrational and counterproductive decisions.
