The European Parliament’s largest right-wing group, Patriots for Europe (PfE), will meet over the weekend under the hospitality of President Santiago Abascal in the Spanish capital, Madrid. The leader of the ever-strengthening VOX party was elected president of PfE in November 2024. As the third-largest political group in the European Parliament, comprising 86 MEPs from sovereignist, right-wing parties across 13 member states, PfE will convene to outline its strategy for the coming months.

However, the significance of the meeting goes beyond discussions on votes, proposals, and policies to support or oppose, as well as the usual political manuevring common at such gatherings. The weekend could mark the birth of a broader, more influential, and socially more significant movement under the name ‘Make Europe Great Again’ (MEGA).

First adopted by Hungary as a motto for its EU Presidency last year—drawing inspiration from Donald Trump’s 2016 and 2024 presidential campaign slogan, ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA)—the concept of MEGA has been gaining traction recently. This surge in popularity is largely due to a post by Elon Musk on X in early January, which simply stated: ‘From MAGA to MEGA: Make Europe Great Again!’ The US billionaire, currently heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and accelerating efforts to drain Washington’s murky swamps, shared another post dedicated to MEGA on 1 February, urging Europeans to join the movement.

Whether by coincidence or design, the timing of the PfE meeting could hardly be more fitting for laying the foundations of MEGA. Although Donald Trump’s second presidency is only in its third week, a series of significant decisions have already shaken the international order—an order whose pillars, to be fair, had been crumbling for many years. The withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Paris Agreement on climate, and the United Nations Human Rights Council; the dismantling of one of the globalists’ most powerful foreign influence tools, the US Agency for International Development (USAID); and the exposure of the mainstream progressive media—undermining their carefully crafted myth of ‘independent journalism’—are all actions that strike at the very core of their power.

This world order, built on progressive ideals, seeks to dismantle traditional Christian values, erase borders, and weaken sovereign nation-states by artificially engineering multiethnic societies. It manipulates electorates through a network of media outlets and NGOs that claim independence but are, in reality, funded by billions in US taxpayer dollars. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF)—part of the globalist network—USAID has funded over 6,200 journalists across 707 media outlets and 279 media NGOs worldwide to promote the woke ideology and globalist agenda. At this point, the liberal world order resembles the Truman Show more than an actual reality in which we live.

Perhaps the greatest and most unforgivable sin of Europe and its leaders is that they forced themselves to fit perfectly into the Washington-led, liberal order, embracing every ideologically driven policy and supporting globalist projects that ultimately made the continent weaker and weaker. From aggressively pushing wokism and accepting millions of migrants to sacrificing industry on the altar of climate change and forcing a green transition at the expense of farmers, as well as overregulating crucial economic sectors, most policies of recent years promoted by globalist progressives have led Europe to its current state: trailing behind the United States, China, Southeast Asia, and, in some cases, even Russia—which, considering the past years of sanction policies, is laughable at best.

One Last Chance to Make Europe Great Again?

However, since Donald Trump’s election as president of the United States those who built the elite behind the liberal world order begun to weaken. As Trump’s team continues to purge US federal agencies and departments of bureaucrats who have long served them, their grip is loosening. This shift is evident in Europe as well, where progressive-led Western countries such as Germany and France continue to spiral into crisis.

While the mainstream struggles to adapt to shifting political realities, patriotic, sovereignist forces are more prepared than ever to take over the ruins left behind from what was once a prosperous and strong Europe. Real right-wing movements have long been marginalized in European politics, barred from taking positions they deserve—such as PfE being denied committee seats in the European Parliament last summer—and placed under a cordon sanitaire. Yet the manipulation of mainstream media no longer sways the masses, and following the USAID scandal, public trust has eroded further. Dissatisfaction with the ruling elite continues to grow.

Right-wing parties across Europe have likely never been in better shape than they are today, thanks in large part to what Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán has called the ‘Trump tornado’. In Germany, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is polling at around 25 per cent according to some pollsters, an unimaginable scenario even a month ago. In Austria, Herbert Kickl—co-founder of PfE alongside Orbán and former Czech prime minister Andrej Babiš—is within reach of forming a government. In France, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally has been leading the polls for months by a significant margin, while Babiš’s ANO in Czechia is also well positioned ahead of the October elections.

MAGA Waiting for MEGA

This weekend’s PfE gathering brings together the most influential figures of the European right: Viktor Orbán, Marine Le Pen, Geert Wilders of the Netherlands’ governing Freedom Party, and others. Nearly all of them support Trump’s MAGA movement and maintain close ties with the US president. Many also have good relations with Elon Musk, not to mention with the Republican Party. Across the Atlantic, MAGA eagerly awaits the rise of MEGA, seeing in the European right a responsible and reasonable partner—unlike those who have cooperated with and been funded by the globalist elite. There will likely never be a better moment for MEGA to emerge.

But the clock is ticking. While they have been slow to react to the seismic changes unfolding, progressives are already preparing to reassert themselves with even greater force. Brussels is moving swiftly: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen making no secret that the current commission will be a ‘geopolitical commission’, breaking with the tradition of keeping the body uninvolved in such matters and taking foreign policy out of the member state’s hands.

Meanwhile, determined never to lose control of the narrative again, the European Parliament on Wednesday launched a new special committee called the ‘European Democracy Shield’ (EUDS). Promoted by von der Leyen under the pretext of combating disinformation—but whose disinformation?—, this initiative is in reality aimed at reinforcing control over public debate and curbing the rise of political forces that challenge Brussels’ centralizing model.

It is clear that the time is now—and time is running out. If the European right seizes the moment and makes the right moves at the right time, Europe will be great again. If they fail, it could mean the continent’s downfall. The moment for MEGA to be born has arrived.
