Saint Stephen School in the Southern Hemisphere
CULTURE & SOCIETY

Saint Stephen School in the Southern Hemisphere

‘Father Thomas rises at six each morning and sounds the bronze bell of his church. He celebrates mass in the Bahasa Indonesia language in the Paroki Santa Perawan Maria Yang Diangkat Ke Surga, that is, the Parish Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary. Beside the traditional psalms, the church resounds with a song lauding Saint Stephen, sung ardently by a choir of one hundred to one hundred and fifty children. In Flores, where 90 per cent of inhabitants profess the Catholic faith, the long-term viability of Christianity is signalled by the fact that more than two hundred Verbite novices studying at the Saint Paul Major Seminary at Ledalero have chosen to serve God as their lifelong calling.’

The Legend of Prester John

The Legend of Prester John

‘This priest-king, of reputable phenomenal wealth and power, who was thought to reign somewhere in the East, galvanized monarchs and explorers throughout the High and Late Middle Ages up to the early Modern period just as the mythical city of El Dorado had done for the Conquistadores. The consensus, however, among medievalists is that the story seems to have originated during the twelfth century. The narrative of Prester John had the practical effect of reinforcing the religious stamina of the crusaders by holding out the promise that a fabulously rich and mighty oriental king-priest was due to march against Islam from the East in support of his fellow Christians.’

The Legal and Ethical Implications of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) in Modern Warfare

‘Stricter AI regulation is needed precisely because of the military use of the technology. Those opposing the legal regulation of artificial intelligence within the European Union have voiced reasonable arguments, such as the fact that overly strict regulations might harm trade within the European Union and can cause economic backlash. But restrictions connected to LAWS do not have such impacts, and their only purpose is to protect civilians and prevent the detrimental possible effects of unregulated attacks.’

‘So it was, so it shall be’ — The Movement of the ‘Uncompromising Hungarian’ Was Launched 96 Years Ago

Following Hungary’s defeat in the First World War, the victors’ intentions were clear concerning our country: to impose punishments that would result, if not in the short term but in the long term, in the total disappearance of the former Central European superpower…The pain caused by Trianon and the desire to do something about it prompted Nándor Urmánczy, the ‘uncompromising Hungarian’ and a member of parliament of Transylvanian origin, to initiate and announce the National Flag Movement in 1925.

Ukraine Invades Russian Kursk — A Desperate Move or a Flicker of Hope for Kyiv?

Both Ukraine’s desperate actions to bring the war to the Russian populace and the humiliation inflicted on Russia by demonstrating its inability to push Ukrainians back to behind its 1991 borders might actually signal the war is heading to an end. As neither side seems to be able to decide the outcome of the conflict with military means, the Ukrainian attempt can be interpreted as a last effort to capture more bargaining chips before the inevitable peace talks.

Dante vs. Europe’s Aggressive Dwarves

‘Hungarians who are looking for a way through this civilizational crisis should turn for wisdom and inspiration to a medieval poet who also lived through a period of tumultuous change, and who found a way out of the ‘dark wood’ of confusion by rediscovering faith in God, and in the things of eternity. Dante was not a Magyar, but like Magyars, he was European—one of the greatest Europeans who ever lived. He speaks to us today, across a sea of time, soaring above the heads of the bustling crowd of aggressive dwarves, and what his booming voice says is: Return.’
