‘To discover this need to escape the darkness, one must first descend. One of the themes of Kontroll is descent, in both a literal and figurative sense. Another tale featuring this theme is La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy) by Italian writer and poet Dante Alighieri (1265–1321). In many ways, Kontroll is a re-telling of The Divine Comedy, with a message of redemption that can be applied to the individual, and to Hungary itself.’

The European Film Academy honours the most significant works of European cinema, with the prestigious European Film Awards being presented in Berlin every odd-numbered year and in another European city every even-numbered year. From the recently announced selection, Academy members will vote for the nominees for the European Film Awards. The 37th awards ceremony will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland, on 7 December.

The award-winning 2018 Hungarian drama Eternal Winter, directed by Attila Szász, based on a screenplay by Norbert Köbli, is a powerful account of the tragic fate of the Swabians in Hungary under the Soviet occupation of the country.

László Csáki’s 2023 animated documentary Pelikan Blue won the grand prize in the feature film category at this year’s Animix International Animation and Comics Festival in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The festival will feature productions made for cinema, television, and streaming platforms in various genres; overall, around a hundred Hungarian films will be screened in Veszprém, Balatonfüred, and Balatonalmádi at a total of twelve venues.
